A King in Kingsville, a Prince in Pain

Author’s Note: I write this piece from an awareness of how necessary it is to admit my struggle with mental health, how urgent it is that I reach out for help, and how much hope I can have if only I wouldn’t keep myself so alone, hiding behind the image of perfection.

He walks the streets doing his business in the city

Tall, handsome, and strong, the picture of dignity

The outside giving no hint to his departing sanity

As the image of perfection, inside he has no clarity.

So strong, he has no strength

So weak, he can have no weakness

So many friends to call his, he has none at all

So many people who love him, he remains so alone.

So much dignity, he is left with none at all

So much inner pain, none can hear his call

So whole, he can’t show that he’s broken

So broken, how will he ever be whole.

He walks the streets doing his business in the city

Tall, handsome, and strong, the picture of dignity

The outside giving no hint to his departing sanity

With such strength and such weakness,

How will he ever live happily?
