The following piece was selected as one of the winners of this year’s Refuat Hanefesh Creative Expression Contest. Age group: College And Up. It has been lightly edited.
The more you try to reach it, it alludes you
You think you’re going to get it but you ain’t seen nothing yet
For only now you see the results of the fire that consumed you
You look to fix, hate to break you more, but there’s just nothing left
In my nightmares I chase it, leaving destruction in my wake
But when I wake up in the morning, I see I’m wrong
It’s killed me it’s too late
CHORUS
Hashem, split the heavens into pieces
Oh Hashem, everything releases
All the hope, pain, joy fear
Of trying to fill a hole somewhere in here
All for one little word
A little word called love
You love it yet you hate it, you push it away but yet crave it
It makes you cry, puts you on a high, makes you want to die
But you just want it more
You are a paradox so confusing that you can never be sure
You’re just looking for an answer- but that was just the beginning
You hurt everyone, you don’t see what you do, with few people forgiving
You break yourself time after time, why can’t you just stop
Is it possible to tame the monster within because you can’t turn back the clock
CHORUS
Hashem, split the heavens into pieces
Oh Hashem, everything releases
All the hope, pain, joy fear
Of trying to fill a hole somewhere in here
All for one little word
A little word called love
